The Sensex and the Nifty closed lower for a third straight session on Tuesday, tracking weakness in global markets amid a worsening situation in West Asia. Rising US treasury bond yields, which shot to a five-month high, also weighed on investors' risk appetite.

Analysts advise investors to adopt caution and wait and watch to see how the developments unfold.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 72943.68 down by -456.1 points or by -0.62 % and then NSE Nifty was at 22147.9 down by -124.6 points or by -0.56 %.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 3647.05,+1.26%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2220.90,+1.20%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1509.40,+0.97%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 12503.15,+0.62%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 274.35,+0.07%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1414.75,-3.65%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1490.75,-3.12%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 448.60,-2.32%), Bajaj Finserv Ltd. (Rs. 1619.05,-2.31%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1476.30,-1.94%), among others.
