Indian benchmarks are expected to start the day on a negative note today. Investors will look at global cues, stock-specific developments, and oil price movement for market direction today.

Overseas, Asian markets followed Wall Street lower this morning while the yen strengthened as investors braced for a Bank of Japan policy meeting next week. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell by 2.72 per cent and the broader based Topix index slipped by 2.39 per cent.

On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 80148.88 down by -280.16 points or by -0.35 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24413.5 down by -65.55 points or by -0.27 %.

On the global front, S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended at multi-week lows on Wednesday, with the S&P snapping one of its longest streaks without a daily decline of more than 2%, as lackluster Alphabet and Tesla earnings undermined investor confidence in megacap names.

Meanwhile, Oil traded lower in Asian trade on concerns over weak demand in China, the world's largest crude importer. Brent crude futures for September fell 38 cents, or 0.5%, to $81.33 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude for September slid 33 cents, or 0.4%, to $77.26 per barrel.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 1075922 with a total turnover of Rs. 72184.97 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 4763228 with a total turnover of Rs. 371401.58 Crore.

Total numbers of contracts for index options were 936338462 with a total turnover of Rs. 69839120.73 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 9193664 with a total turnover of Rs. 737070.29 Crore.

The FIIs on 24/07/2024 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 15526.59 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 3165.23 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 17075.23 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 700.13 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -1548.64 Crore and Rs. 2465.10.
