Indian benchmarks continued to extend losses during the noon trading session while Auto stocks were under pressure. The broader markets showed optimism, with the MidCap index rising by 0.6 per cent and the SmallCap index surging by 1.6 per cent.

Overseas, Australian shares are trading slightly higher on Wednesday, giving up some of the gains in the previous session, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 staying below the 8,000 mark, following the broadly negative cues from Wall Street overnight.

Meanwhile, HUL gave up 2 percent after reporting a modest 2.7 percent growth in quarterly profit. Bajaj Finance declined 2.5 percent despite reporting a 14 percent increase in its Q1 net profit, meeting estimates.

Among individual shares, shares of United Spirits (USL), one of the leading beverage alcohol companies in India and a subsidiary of global leader Diageo plc, hit a record high of Rs 1,416.85, as they soared 7 per cent on the BSE in Wednesday’s intra-day trade in an otherwise weak market.

At 12:23 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 79854 down by -575.04 points or by -0.71 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24393.35 down by -85.7 points or by -0.35 %. Sensex touched intraday high of 80519.58 and intraday low of 79750.51 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 24504.25 and intraday low of 24367.80.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 1023.00,+2.16%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1521.00,+1.82%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 387.10,+1.24%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 337.10,+0.93%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1615.80,+0.84%), among others.

Whereas, top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 6566.00,-2.47%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1234.50,-2.24%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1730.65,-2.19%), Bajaj Finserv Ltd. (Rs. 1583.70,-2.11%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1591.00,-1.67%), among others.

Among the sectors, Oil&Gas index was at 30772.7 up by 405.59 points or by 1.34%. Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 321.75,+2.47%), Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (Rs. 545.50,+2.17%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 311.75,+1.90%), Adani Total Gas Ltd. (Rs. 890.85,+1.44%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 350.90,+1.34%),.

On the other side, Auto index was at 56997.62 down by -267.66 points or by -0.47%. TVS Motor Company Ltd. (Rs. 2427.05,-1.86%), Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd. The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4067 , shares advanced were 2712 while 1191 shares declined and 164 were unchanged.
